Performance categories and characteristics

A performance measurement category is a group of characteristics related to a specific type of behaviour of a measured system.

Each performance category contains several performance characteristics and each characteristic can be represented by one or more performance metrics.

Every system performance metric belongs to one or more of the following three performance categories:

  1. Powerfulness.

  2. Reliability.

  3. Efficiency.

The behaviour of a system can be described by an almost endless number of metrics.

The purpose of performance categories is to focus the work on system performance to on a limited set of metrics, related to a specific type of behaviour.

Powerfulness category

Powerfulness are measurements of a system’s delivery limits, i.e. how much services can be produced or how fast can services be delivered.

Powerfulness characteristics are usually the only association to a system's performance. To get a full picture of a system's behaviour, however, more performance categories must be studied.

Reliability category

Reliability are measurements of a system’s conditional limits, i.e. the circumstances for maintainable service levels.

Reliability characteristics are associated to a system's behaviour over time and during critical situations, such as resource shortages, or overload situations.

In the connected world, however, reliability characteristics are rapidly getting more and more important.

Reliability related characteristics of a systems take long time to measure, but never the less are really important to be done.

The reward is a rock solid system that can handle system critical situations could put the system out of business.

A reliability related misbehaviour of a systems is unfortunately hard to reproduce and therefore hard and time consuming to fix.

Consequently unreliable systems usually face a short life cycle in the connected world.

Efficiency category

Efficiency are measurements of a system’s productivity limits,i.e. required efforts for service production.

Efficiency characteristics are associated to a system's resource usage for different services.

In the connected world where reliability characteristics are rapidly getting more and more important work on a system's efficiency in service production is a key to a robust and reliable system.

Efficiency characteristics are usually usually easy to measure and shall be done in combination with powerfulness measurements.
